It's Draft Day

The draft is such a big day for so many people. It's amazing how much worry and concern fans invest in what their team is going to do. It's even more amazing that for the last two months the thought process of every NFL organization is plunged into dark rooms breaking down film for hours on end. All this to find maybe two or three players that might become great.

It's funny because every year when draft day rolls around my only concern is whether or not the Redskins are going to draft a couple of cool guys to hang out with. Someone I can have a beer with. Is that too much to expect? Maybe today will be my day. Last year it worked out great for me because Dallas Sartz, Jordan Palmer, and Tyler Ecker were all great friends. The only problem involves whether or not they are going to make the team after training camp. Watching guys you've made friends with get cut on the final day of camp is a disaster.

So this year I've really had a hard time getting into the the excitement of new players. I guess it's just happening, so I might as well have a little fun with it. Earlier on the blog we talked about a draft Q and A. I figured now would be a good time to do it. I felt the last Q and A on the site went great, but it was the most fun answering the off the wall questions. (Who would win in a tag team match? Me and Christy or Tony Romo and Jessica Simpson?) What I want to do is ask everyone to submit their questions about the draft. I'm going to pick the ten most original questions or ideas that I want to talk about. I think it should be a lot of fun, and I will really look forward to the questions. I'll give this post five days and then make the selections.

Chris,

Who was the first Skin you befriended and what bar did you have your first drink in Washington at?

Jason

Chris,

Which ESPN guru are you most likely to find in the Star Wars Bar? Mel Kiper with his space helmet hair and tinted shades, John Clayton with his shrunken head and size 54 suit jacket, Merrill Hodge with his 9 Button Suit, or Sean Salisbary for just being a jerk off with a fake tan?

Al Poon

What felon do you see the cowboys getting next?

No really is there a defensive rookie you are looking forward to burning like you do Roy Williams every year??

Of all the potted plants you've stolen across the country, which is your favorite?

What do you think the first thing piece of team merchandise that most players buy from their team? I know you get allot of stuff for free but do allot of guys go on the team website and buy a hat?

Chris,

First thanks for taking time to answer fans' questions. It's pretty sweet. My question: would you ever agree to be on the cover of Madden or do you believe in the curse?

A new NFL draftee has just cashed their first guaranteed check, do they head to Eastern Motors for pimped out car, to Bling ‘R Us for a Rolex , or to Mad Money’s Jim Cramer to make their investment grow? How the hell do you go about spending millions when you are use to eating at McDonald’s?

You upset that the skins drafted a TE so high in the draft?

Where do you usually go out drinking in DC? Lets do some shots!

Quick hypothetical: you go out one night and get absolutely hammered, and then it turns out they put you in charge of the draft for the redskins. You then drunkly decide to draft the following:
-any professional athlete who doesn't play football
-the rapper whose song is playing right then
-a comedian
-an incredibly hot girl you'd get to see walking around in the locker room
Who would they be? Who would you want to get ripped with before this? Feel free to add your own.

cheers,
pete

Fred Davis?? Beer? Multiple T.E. offense? Excited?

Will you ever give us your version of what went down with the Redskinettes? Please...I know it has nothing to do with the draft but.....

Chris,

Did you see the Bill Belichick interview on tv? Just curious if you enjoyed his suit with the added touch of a shiny pink tie and shirt.....Just odd how he never dresses up and then comes out with his best Elton John impression on draft day. Can we say awkward?

Well, we absolutely neglected both the offensive and defensive line issues. I wonder who is going to protect JC when we apparently are going to run five wide on every down.

Reciever, Tight End, Reciever, to many skill players? What about the D-Line? Don't get me wrong I am a big supporter of Reed Doughty, but is he the answer at safety?

Bull S***. We knew we wanted a reciever but why the fu*k do we draft college's best tight end when we already have the NFL's best tight end???

Sir Cooley,

Not so much about the draft as it is about the windbags on ESPN that spend months talking about it. On a scale of 1 to 10, how much do you want to reach through the TV screen and give Chris Berman a swirly (preferably in the toilet that Mark Schlereth and/or Mike Golic last crapped in) every time you hear him say, "Geeeee-Men"?

If you were to build your own personal draft guru, what attributes would you consider crucial? Helmet hair? Draft projections that change daily? Shaded glasses indoors? An ever-so-slight lisp? The inablity to pronounce the "g" in strength?

CHRIS!!!! Another tight end.. what do you think that this spells for Todd? I can't say that I agree with the pick, even though it compliments a WCO style. Such a shocker to all of Skins Nation I think. We were looking DE, DT, or CB... then to get another TE. Very interesting, to say the least, despite the sets run.

Wait, I actually finished reading this blog. I am declaring eligible for the draft next year, because I want to be on a player's list of "Who to get a beer with."

My true calling has come and I'm a pretty dope punter, I'm walking on next year. The contract, the assignment, the fantasy blogs; none of them matter anymore, my goal is to drink beer with the Redskins. If you know of any way that could advance me in this high-profile role, I'd be extremely appreciative to know it.

I think you should utilize this blog to help generate some ideas for some creative pranks to play on the incoming rookies at Training Camp.

I see the Redskins drafted a punter. Is it possible for a "regular" football player to hang out with a punter/kicker or are they just a couple of dorks?

Chris,
Do you hang out with pro athletes other than football players? If so, who and how did you meet them? Also, besides other pro athletes, any famous people that you're close with?
Thanks,
Buy a poopie pie.

Interesting draft for you guys, the best player available mantra in full effect. You guys look loaded on offense with this new influx of 2nd rounders. The 2 TE set should be in full effect. Your opinions?

Chris,

Sorry we missed the Draft at the field, saw some of it on TV. Not enought time on Sat. with the kids baseball & softball games. I just wanted to say The Melvin's love your site, great idea!! We can't wait to get some T-shirt's to help Christy advertise for you!! The hair cut is you too dude!!!

Kim, Cliff, Savannah & Reed

Who was the player or players who helped you adjust to the NFL game when you first came into the league? Do you think you can serve in a similar mentor role for Fred Davis and help him understand the nuances of playing TE in the NFL?

My Dear Mr. Cooley:

Why did you not advertise the fact that you were doing a "Meet & Greet" for your charity at the Draft Day Party on Saturday?!! I was WAY disappointed to hear about it after the fact. :( I would have gladly donated mucho dinero to meet the man. Next time please warn us stalkers... I mean FANS in advance. Thankyouverymuch! MW

What is your honest feeling towards fans who recognize you and ask for an autograph or a picture? Do you just want to be left alone?

What's the most memorable thing a fan has said or asked you?

Do you have a favorite reporter or journalist? Print, TV, or Blogger?

Cc,
As fans, we really like watching the draft over the days of build mock drafts, actual draft, and thru draft success evaluations. These possible teammates can push you further in the playoffs towards the ultimate goal. Do you, as a player have concern for the draft or does your attitude shift to it is what it is. (you have no control over draftpicks)

Do you think the draft leaned towards the offense based on Zorn coming in?

I think NFL teams need a top notch defense first, then offense. (I'm an offensive minded fan, too) Our defense has gapping holes to fill, depth needed - seemed like your bosses ignored these issues. Do you feel we should have drafted more defensive players, esp after getting 2 big WR. (I'm not sold on another TE need). We need linebackers and corners, in a bad way.

How do I get an invite to your wedding?

Can you give me a ballpark estimate on the number of Skins who have made a clumsy pass at Lindsey Czarniak?

Unrelated follow up: How many times in his 4 years as your coach did you hear Coach Gibbs utter any profanity?

Can the redskins afford to sign all these draft picks and still have room left for free agents? (esp after those $$$ they gave you last year, lol)

Do you favor a rookie salary limit based on your draft position? If possible speak from a rookies viewpoint and now a veterans view point. Obviously, I feel like a proven veteran should make more money than an unproven rookie. I would pay Lorenzo Alexander this year more money than Health Shuler signing as a rookied draft pick.

Did you have any chance to voice your opinion of players needed in the draft? Does any player voice his concerns(legitimately)?

Is Clinton Portis the real Vinny Cerato? Those eyes give him away.

What is the weirdest thing you have read about yourself or someone you know in draft profiles? "Great Measurables?" "Great length?"

CC-

Figure you'll probably just lump these Fred Davis questions together, but here's a couple more.

Have you had a chance to talk to him yet? What do you think of him? Do you think the competition (assuming he turns out to be as good as we're hoping) will push you (and perhaps help with the inattentiveness in team meetings ;)

Chris,

Were you "hazed" at all as a rookie, I know Sean Taylor got the blinding pie to the face from LaVar in 2004...you have any pranks played on you?

Cooley,

Your drawings kick-a**! Which drawing are you most proud of and have you done any drawings for anyone on the team? --Sorry it's not draft related... just curious.

Good beer or are you Bud guy?

/

has your ADD ever costed you on the field? I'd love to hear a funny story about you missing a block because you were thinking about boobies.

You mentioned on the Shutdown Corner post what Parcells thought of you. What were some of the things other coaches and scouts/Mel Kiper Jr. said about you? Did you pay attention to those evaluations or just sit back and wait to be picked by someone?

One more question: have you ever participated in an NFL draft drinking game? I highly encourage it.

Okay I have a draft question... I think... What is the funniest thing the team has ever done to a Redskin rookie and are the pranks worse if the rookie was a high draft pick?

Thanks!

Janie

Chris,

What is your gameday routine during the regular season? How does it vary for home vs. away games? You da man Chris!

Cooley,

Let me first just say that it's kind of awkward talking to you over the internet...but with that said:

What's your Chipotle order? Could gain/lose a lot of respect here...

Who would win in a spelling contest: Emmitt Smith, Tyson, Michael Irving, or Beetlejuice from H. Stern?

Jessica Alba or Marissa Miller?

Better College theme party: One-piece flannel pajama suit with the plastic booties (so sick growing up) OR sweatpants and viagra?

lets bring back the weekly costumes this year...

Last thing: You became a skins legend during that Dallas game at home during the 2005 season.

hey chris,

What do you think about the skins draft?
Matt

Hey Chris. What's up with the skins always wearing white jerseys? How come the red ones are never worn? Would you like an alternate jersey? Such as the ravens all black, chargers baby blue, dolphins orange for example.

One of the biggest moves the Skins made In my opinion was drafting Colt Brennan. I personally like the idea of Colt to Cooley a lot better than Campbell to Cooley (but thats another story)

So My question is. Whats more likely to happen down the road, Chris Cooley getting Colt Brennan dreadlocks or Colt Brennan rocking some a Cooley-esque Afro?

Chris,

Let's talk about important stuff. Are you obsessed with LOST? Who's your favorite character? What do you think about Henry/Ben - good guy or bad guy? Any other thoughts?

If you were a GM drafting a player to cover Chris Cooley, what position would it be? CB, S, or LB?

chris,

first of all you rock...
my question is. im about to buy a car either a black scion tc or a black dodge avanger...what would you pick. i told my girlfriend id have you decide haha!

my email is talldude8907@yahoo.com
PLEASE REPLY!

dude are you gonna be her husband or her pimp either way, your in bro...

tight end marries tight end... lol

Chris,
I love your blog on the white afro.Very funny.psst.And probably very politically incorrect on the other end of Don Imus's "controversial" remarks

Lindsay?A man(Bill B.) with a pink tie??Are you sure that was a man?Sounds like someone may have been exposed to too much "estrogen" from the public water supply.
God bless,
Trisha

Chris,

Why do you forget to let everyone know that you cheated on your wife, at the time, with Christy??? Dont try and make people belive that you are this good guy that just feel in love the first time you saw her. You told your ex you were in love with her too. Christy needs to watch out. Someday that someone might come along again that takes your breath away and you will be doing the same thing again, but to Christy this time. If she is just using you for your money she is one smart girl!!!!! Paybacks a BITCH!!
